"As a parent I was unwilling to just wait and see if it [my daughter's scoliosis] would get worse. This gave us an active way to prevent reaching bracing or surgical thresholds--And we did! Coming from Tampa what we found was not just the nearest Schroth PT, but the most caring and concerned therapist we could have hoped for. She's really intelligent, keeping up with the latest in Schroth best practices; personable, and patient with explaining what to do, why to do it that way, and how to do it better each time. She managed my daughter's pain where other PT's had not. She tailors all recommendations to my daughter's specific curve, and adjusts them often as the curve changes, as she grows, and has her sports activities change throughout the year. I would still continue to come to Sarah if a closer option became available." --M.H

"Sarah is the best physical therapist I have had and is very specialized in treating scoliosis. I would recommend this therapy for anyone struggling with scoliosis whether they have had surgery to treat their condition or not. The Schroth method helps to counteract your spinal curvature and has provided me with tactics I need to keep my lower curve from progressing after surgery to my upper curve. It has helped me straighten out my posture. Other physical therapy treatments that are more general and not specifically for scoliosis patients, have not been able to get to the root of my back pain and the many factors that work together in the management of a progressive curve. Sarah's knowledge, care, empathy, and problem-solving abilities have greatly bettered my life and helped me learn techniques I can use to strengthen my back throughout my life!" --L.A.

"Discovering the Schroth method was a revelation to me. All my assumptions about what I could and could not do with scoliosis have had to be completely recalibrated. After a few months immersed in the concerted practice of its' specialized techniques, and the more conventional physical therapy exercises as their complement, remarkable health improvements gradually emerged, in my breathing, posture, walking, strength, flexibility, and perhaps most significantly, in my overall outlook as well. If pressed for brevity I would describe Schroth as a systematic therapeutic approach that allows a personal to both imagine and inhabit a domain of novel functional possibility. If you have scoliosis it deserves your attention." --J.T
The Schroth Method was created in Germany and has been used for over 100 years. It has been in the United States with a certification program since 2009. The outcomes are peaking interest in the U.S., but have yet to become widespread so Schroth treatment is not available at most PT clinics. Thus, many doctors still do not know about it as an option in scoliosis treatment.
Scoliosis is a 3D spiral of the spine, not just a sidebend of the spine, however the sidebend is the plane we see mostly on the x-ray used to diagnose scoliosis. The Schroth method is an exercise technique aimed at addressing the scoliotic curvature from all 3 planes. The exercise is specifically tailored to your scoliotic curvature based on x-ray analysis as well as clinical aspects. The exercise starts with props to assist you in understanding the movement and progresses to more challenging positions. The goal is to strengthen you out of your curvature after teaching you how to get there. The method utilizes breathing techniques to help you achieve a position that is out of the curvature, this also helps to restore a normal breathing pattern rather than a compensatory one commonly seen with scoliosis.
Traditional physical therapy has not been shown to manage a scoliotic curvature. It is primarly attemping to manage symptoms such as pain. While strengthening the core is good, non-Schroth PT is strengthening you while you are in the scoliotic posture. The Schroth method is strengthening you from an improved posture and alignment which improves the recruitment of muscles and puts forces on bones to help them reshape to some extent. In this way the Schroth method has been shown to stop curve progression and has a better ability to manage symptoms at the level that they are caused which is more effective.
